This was a fun project that I enjoyed working on. Really thought it was funny to see reactions and see how much we can do with the page source.

Project 0: OBSERVE week 2

For this week’s submission, I focused on how, whenever you do a google search, google tells you about how many results there are for it, and how long it took to get them. It’s in small text, so it’s clearly not meant to be a key feature of the page–but if that’s the case, why did google include it? Isn’t their whole deal about simplicity, and clean, appealing interfaces, etc? The vast majority of people doing a google search aren’t going to look past the first page, so they won’t particularly care how many billions of results there. In terms of the timestamp, most people only care about their internet speed when they think it’s too slow, and even then, they’re more likely to complain or check their connection than consult google to learn exactly how many hundredths of a second too long it took.

Majority of users aside, I know there are plenty of people who do use this information; chances are, these people are going to know more about the interface they’re engaging with than a casual user would. But if they’re already knowledgeable about this search engine, then why wouldn’t google stash that information away somewhere, and hide it where only people who already knew about it were likely to look?

I’m probably overthinking this.

This image is a screenshot of an article on American Heart Association. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in america. Mainly caused by the mass consumption of animal products. Here is a completely contradictory article promoting chicken and fish instead of red meat becuase it has less cholesterol. I added in a few words to expose this system for making articles in order to generate revenue rather than find ways to cure.

On the bottom of the screen you can see that Amazon is being very honest today.

The truth about iPhones update. They do a very good job making everybody feel like it is absolutely necessary to update your phone.

Facebook really really really wants you to care about your relationship with your friends THROUGH Facebook. They continuously bombard you with notifications and made up holidays to keep you on Facebook and connected with people. This one here is a time to celebrate friends. They made a whole video for me, even going back to my friends from middle school. I made the page look a little real instead of the BS that Facebook throws at you everyday

Project 0: 2

I got this immediately after putting in my email to sign up for reddit. I haven’t even made a username or password, but reddit already assumes that I won’t back out of the sign up and asks what I am interested in. It looks like they are trying to tangle me into reddit even before the process, adding that layer of “well I already did the optimization, might as well follow through” mindset. It subscribed me to 5 subreddits (none of which I browsed beforehand), but labeled it as “Just for you” I don’t know how they could reach the conclusion that is just for me when I have left zero digital footprints to indicate that I was interested in these subreddits. It makes me curious on how they pull these together and if it is consistent with everybody.

Observe 2

Option 2:

I decided to choose option 2 this time because I realized that I often obsess over an aspect of software. For example, Kylie Kardashian just announced to the world that she gave birth to a baby girl. This was a shock for many people because somehow they kept this a secret for 9 months. She released this information by posting a youtube video on her instagram profile named “To Our Daughter.”  After I finished watching the video I hit refresh on the page and the number of views sky rocketed, so I did it again and the views shot up by another 200. I was fascinated by how the views update so quickly and was actually slightly obsessed with seeing how much they would continue to go up.

Project 0 Contact The Guardian

I started reading The Guardian for news after they released documents from Edward Snowden. Often in my busy schedule I scroll through the headlines looking for news I can handle that day and news I can not handle (almost like I’m reading Huffington Post) but one banner on the web page always stands out to me.

I realized that the Tip us off banner is incredibly prominent in the lay out of the page. It is meant to be seen easily and accessed easily by any reader. I finally decided to click on the banner to see how easy it is to securely contact The Guardian. Below are the screen captions of contact pages with directions on setting up a secure drop an encrypted email or the pros and cons of mailing them physical packages. Not only does this structure easily engage with a wide diversity of internet users but it also points to a concern of the organization as a whole: privacy and long form journalism. I poked around on CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and my local Baltimore news stations: WJZ and WBAL. Non of them listed any options for contacting with news stories, let alone, contacting with encrypted messaging. Of course the information is probably buried deep in the websites but non of them display contacting them as an integral feature of the news experience.

Part of me wonders if there isn’t some link here between media outlets through their design seem to promote participation in democracy vs. tell you about your democracy in hopes of galvanizing the viewer/reader. Trolls and angry people are perfectly capable of sending hate or threat mail to journalists even in the most obscure publications so they seem to have the tools at hand to contacting news outlets. Is The Guardian’s banner directed at those who normally wouldn’t even contact the news? Is it possible for them to offer this service being a pay-wall-less, non-broadcasting news entity in a small yet powerful nation?

Project 1 Instagram Limits in stories

Instagram is a medium used by many “self starters” and the platform is functioning to promote quick clicking and fast consumption of images. I wondered if I couldn’t use that impulse to make something else appear in the process. There is not any political content in this story construction but this may be a nice jumping off plat form in the future.

Day 1. I created Beethoven’s 9th symphony using an internet tone generator to help test hearing loss. (my friend Liza couldn’t the tones). Each color in the story was a short video of 7 seconds. Each separate upload to the story is a separate color and note. The song plays slowly if you watch them for their whole duration and plays more effectively if you give into the compulsion to click through quickly.

The first day showed there was a consistent 40 people who were following the song all the way to the end.

Day 2. This day was poor posting time if you want a lot of viewers. I posted Twinkle Twinkle Little Star late at night. the song had a few more notes to it but upon playing the song back for myself I realized the tapping delay was causing viewers to drop off if the playing of the note was not immediate. The color field showed no shift so it didn’t make the delay apparent. So the following story would have to be different.

Day 3 was a stop motion film with no sound. The film is a poem that I animated in charcoal and already existed in film format. I uploaded as many frames I could to see what the limit would be. I reached a limit of approximately 120 images in the story before the app started deleting the first images. The app also reflected that I had slowed it on my phone and it showed glitches that the story had a good hundred photos deleted.

The story now has less viewership now but I’m getting more private messages about the piece.

Project 0 Advertizing

This App is dating me. And I’m not even using the App. Anyway. This is less about the website imgur and more about add placement on my phone and the way my phone adds correspond to my computer adds.

A number of adds have come up in my phone for tractor trailer hauling jobs. Another add that keeps popping up for me, is for rehab centers. Both of these adds feel like they pertain to conversations I have had but not taken to google.

Questions: How much of the add collection data is related to the specific app? Which platform gleaned the information from my life and funneled it into the wide network of cookies? Am I paranoid? Multiple NPR specials on internet privacy have had callers making such complaints but experts have dismissed the “phone is always listening to you” theory.

Project 0

I found it interesting the thing Facebook prioritized to constantly show you in the side bar despite the amount you scroll. Many of these things are easy ways for you to get sucked into long activities through Facebook, such as chatting or games.

Project 0: OBSERVE (option 1)

In the process of working on project 1, I rediscovered Omegle. The website’s homepage asks you to list some of your interests.

But. . .

When the website couldn’t find anyone with a shared interest, it just connected me to a random user, without ever asking me. The text that explains this to the user is deliberately made tiny and easy to overlook. Even when it can’t find someone appropriate to match you with, Omegle is desperate to keep you on their site, so instead, it connects you with someone random, and hopes you won’t notice.

Project 0

I  used  Snapchat and how it really aims to get you to send as many snaps as you can. The interface is very vivid and bright and really draws your eye. When you get a new snap it is at the top and all of them have time stamps. It lets you know when you got a new snap and how long you have been lacking. It can be very useful but really gives you that, ” hey you’ve been ignoring this person or app for 45 minutes.” It also really encourages you to explore snap stories because it is always glowing and with the implementation of ads, they make some revenue by having you go through your friends stories and hitting you with an ad out of no where. Most icons on the app are kept clean and white or black, but when their is some sort of intended interaction it is colored and encouraged for you to check it out. It also gives special attention to certain friends and groups by adding special emojis to show who has priority and tells you who your best friends are even though that label may be completely off.

Project 1 – Try With A Friend

In my first project I ended up using Snapchat. When you turn on the filters with your front camera you are able to choose from a variety of different faces, ears, or other cool designs once it recognizes your face. On some, it works with multiple faces being on the screen telling you to “Try With A Friend”. For my project I tested it out what would happen if I went up to people I have never even met before asking them to be the 2nd face instead of using an actual friend of mine to see if Snapchat be could encourage a complete stranger to be my “friend” for this picture and maybe an add on the app. After the picture I would then introduce myself and ask for their name.

Despite what I thought, people mainly responded very positively to me coming up to them with absolutely no context whatsoever and asking them to take a picture with me. Some were prepared to even hold conversation with me afterwards and seemed very at ease with Three of them even agreed to add me one snapchat even though I didn’t know them. The range of locations go from people I meet on the street, to some of my classes, restaurants, and even the Arc just to test out if the location could maybe factor into as well. There was only one person out of the group of people I asked that denied my request and funny enough that was the one that was found on the street. That hurt my feelings but its okay. Some people (like Jack in the given photo and one other girl who is not represented) gave me questioning looks at first but after a smile and maybe a “please?” they confidently agreed to take it with great smiles! This shows that the use of Snapchat justifies an social interaction where the parties involved know nothing about each other. What aspect of snapchat makes people think I’m not some creep wanting to get a picture of them to keep? Is it the filters? Would it have been different if I had just used my camera app? Do the words “filter” and “friend” actually compliment each other?

Project 0

I use reddit far more than I should, it is definitely a website where you could keep digging and digging and you’ll always be right at the surface with all the new content that comes out everyday. I noticed that many thumbnails that involve screenshots or photos that can be previewed are almost always useless. They never really help give you more insight on the post and instead adds more to the mystery that makes you click on the post or at least the bigger preview button, reddit wants you to give each post that you’re interested more time or baits you into being more interested in a post. It allows you to feel like you’re just casually surfing, but you end up exploring a lot more posts and subreddits that you’d care to admit.

Project 0

I was watching a video on Facebook and I went to tag someone as soon as the ad started to play and I immediately couldn’t finish commenting or post it.

Notice the like, comment, and share buttons are all grayed out.  I couldn’t comment until the ad was finished and the ad wouldn’t play until I had the whole video visible, forcing me to either exit the video or finish the ad to comment.

Project 0 – Personal Software Obsession

The person software obsession that I’ve had for this week comes from Snapchat. I was and usually am obsessed with seeing how many people viewed my story. Most of the time on Snapchat people don’t even care to look at other’s stories so it low key makes me feel special when people take the time even tap on my name regardless of it they care or watch the entire thing. I don’t post on my story as frequent as I used to but this proves that I still check just as much.
