For my observe this week, I wanted to show how theSkimm draws the readers attention through an email news website. They usually make the Topic of the message short and catchy and do the same with the layout of subject material in the email. They use informal language to draw readers in and only talk about the bare minimum while still providing the necesary details. For someone like me, I think this is great because it saves me time from going to a formal news website such as FOX, CNN, of NYTimes and covers just enough so I can get the gist of whats going on. They also provide hyperlinks so you can refer to a subject of interest more in depth. I think theSkimm is a great way for a busy college student to make time for news.

I had a lot of fun with these mashups, and you can see mine below!
My very useful mashup is this Weather Page I created. This lays out the current weather from my two most visited weather forecast websites. Now I don’t need to check them both individually, and I can compare the information between the two sites with a quick glance. As a bonus, this mashup is located on a personal page, which I frequently use.
Another fun project is my backgroundNoise website. This is a personal mashup for fun and in remembrance of times past. These video mashups actually started on the multiplier (it’s the last one on my list below). I liked the results so much that I figured out how to make it work on a personal website. The trickiest part was getting the middle video to be muted while the other two played.
I think I had way too much fun mashing videos together. I created 4 so far, with varying reasons behind each. Here are my mashups that are on the multiplier:

This Olympic brother-sister duo caught my attention this year, while the Rage video is something that I’ve seen before and lingers in my mind. For fun, I mashed these two together because they are both videos about family, but one shows familial love, while the other shows quite the opposite. I wanted to see what would happen. What I found most interesting was how the two videos were in sync. This led to some rather disturbing and intriguing overlaps with the video and sound. I think this is attributed to the formatting nature of the two videos — one is a newscast, which are undoubtedly formatted to the minute; the other is a documentary of sorts, which most likely also follows a format. The formatting doesn’t surprise me, but how close they both are to each other was a surprise.

I read about this family in some smut magazine recently. While snooping around online, I found some videos of the children, and a news interview about them. This mashup is simply to bring more attention to the issue.

I stumbled upon the first video of the children and thought it could use a little background music. A quick search later, and I found the gem on the right. I think they play well together, and music adds a little more drama to the interview of the children.

This is the same thing as the backgroundNoise website, but it’s on the multiplier. I started on the multiplier, liked the results, and then figured out how to make it work on a personal website.

This is my Project 4 turned into a extension as well: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/no-more-clickbait/leglelmelehodakligpgbgbfabcinofd?utm_source=gmail
In my project 5 I chose to replace the places of input on a multitude of websites with a link to an image that tells the person to be quiet. On social media there is a tendency to respond to every little thing you see and this extension makes it so that you can’t respond to things that you see online that may trigger you or give you an opportunity to trigger someone else. My extension is made to keep people quiet and just go with the normal flow of information without responding to thing or interacting too much with the other people around the website.
I used the new stuff Ben taught me utilizing the click function thing to make it so when you press inside of the text box it links you to somewhere else
I play a lot of hearthstone, and whenever they announce the release of a new expansion the always advertise the ability to pre purchase packs, not even at a reduced cost. It just amazes me that although I couldn’t capture it in a still screenshot, it is the only thing animated on the page is that little present next to the pre-purchase now button jiggles a bit, a ploy obviously used to try and capture your eye movement. I think it’s hilarious that people buy into paying for something they don’t even know anything about yet, but they obviously are targeting bandwagoners and people who are willing to sink in a cost with just a sliver of knowledge of what they’re getting.
This week’s observe is based off a cool app I saw on the App store. Mubert is trying to expand and find new music for us to listen to using AI technology. The app is supposed to help increase productivity in work and studying. It is such a brilliant cool little app, that has immense potential. I am not the person that downloads many apps or downloads trending apps. But when the icon looked so simple, clean, and the app is music category; I had no choice but to read the description. The interface is just as beautiful as the icon. Seriously, their isn’t much to click or get distracted by. Of course this could be expanded upon, but I really dig the simplicity and genuineness of the app. The three categories that are set are work, studying, and creating. So depending in the mood you are in you choose yours, and the AI starts generating some decent beats to help and enlighten. I mean, it’s definitely not for everyone, the music genre is very limited. If you listen to country for some odd reason as you study, and want some new country fused beats to help you, this ain’t the app for you. Most of the tunes stick to electronic, synth, chill, house-like beats. I really do enjoy the app, I don’t use it all the time but it is definitely something I open whenever I want to get a random playlist of chill songs. It really competes with SoundCloud for me when it comes to finding music in this field.
This project 0 similar to my others ones is a combination of a software obsession and analyzing how software constructs as the user. This time around I’m looking at Yelp. Before meeting my girlfriend I had never even used the Yelp app but now to help us decide where we’re going to eat I use it pretty frequently because she can’t help me decide what we’re going to eat for her life so I use it. It’s been a go-to for seeing restaurants nearby and the quality and pricing of these places with the occasional review. The thing I noticed recently about it though was that a early after I had just downloaded it, it asked me if I wanted to connect to Facebook and I never really knew why. I thought it was just a way to easily give yourself an identity on the app by giving your picture when you leave a review. I just learned recently that it also, without a setting being turned on, puts up responses that some of your facebook friends posted onto a feed of yours. I feel like this is Yelp’s way of influencing the user more on the so-called “good” restaurants because their friends gave it a good review. What if I didn’t care where my friends ate or what they thought of it. Facebook and Yelp just kind of give me this random information about some place that friends ate regardless of if they can even be applicable to me. In the screenshot one of the girls that updated this “status” of sorts is living in New York and I feel like I can’t do anything with this information. Yelp is trying to have this Facebook-like appeal to it where there is a feed where friends share and you can like or dislike a restaurant accordingly. Its almost as if Yelp is trying to fit into this “template” for a successful app by copying that of facebook with the implication of a feed.
This week I looked at the twitch app on iPhone. I don’t really watch streamers or even care too much about it. I don’t stream myself. However, when I tuned in to a twitch streamer this weekend, I used the app and saw how seamless it was. It was very user friendly and was easy to navigate. I didn’t think it was going to be that simple for something that may be complex on desktop on the website. Twitch does a great job separating everything into sections and creating a very nice UI. Personally, I enjoyed the experience of getting to my content quickly and being able to get to my settings on the fly. It gives you just the right amount of tabs to find what you need. In a way reminds me of Instagram’s UI. It gives you all the tools to quickly watch, upload, and find content. Unlike some other apps, finding your content or streamers is the first thing you see upon opening the app, which is convenient and quick. You have everything laid out for you and gives you the best layout for you to get used to it. Even though I don’t watch much streamers, It gives you a nice tab to find content and see top streamed games. So finding new things is also great if you need that. Overall, it’s a real simple app to use and get to whatever you need on a quick matter.

This week I’m blogging about the mobile game Angry Birds 2. The original Angry Birds was and is still is one of the best mobile games on the market. The objective of the game and the strategy was super fun to play with especially when the game is in your pocket at all times. Now since the release of the second one, the application is definitely trying to get something out of you when playing this game. The game itself has turned into a swarm of getting point, gems, black balls, feathers, and all this other pointless crap so that you can share it with your friends. There are leaderboard charts on basically every screen. Facebook must have invested in Angry Birds to some extent because the amount of in-game purchases and other charts on the interface is absolutely ridiculous. This game is definitely trying to real me into buying things and sharing the experience with my friends so that they do the same. It’s like these angry birds don’t want me to sit peacefully and play alone for no charge.
this pops up basically every time I open Angry Birds^^^^
When I downloaded the app this came up without me clicking anything
While checking my time hop this photo of my sister and here friends popped up along with something new. The “see who remembers this” popped up right above the share button.
This is only the second time this has popped up. I’ve tried to figure out how it is decided but I can’t seem to recreate or trigger the pop up on any other post or even this one again.
