Observe 4

For this observe its a combination of both an obsession and how software constructs a user. I’m talking about what is known as a “tier list” when it comes to competitive gaming. The one I show is for a fighting game called Dragonball FighterZ. A tier list for competitive gaming is to show how how popular certain characters are over others and ranks them accordingly in groups called tiers. The one offered by the site eventhub tracks this popularity and updates it daily and shows the changes and popularity over days as well as weeks and months. This contributes heavily to how competitive games are played, mainly because there is a common misconception that the tier list shows how powerful a certain character. This is important for this game in particular (only being a few weeks old) because when people see this they are more inclined to use the characters who are top tier and “overpowered” and less inclined to the lower tiered characters who apparently have something wrong with them. Sure there is some truth in them that some characters do more damage and are easier to use than others but it doesn’t mean that a low tier character with not as much damage or utility in the hands of someone who practices them a lot can’t completely decimate someone who uses top tier characters. Its very crucial to this games online diversity because when I play I see so many of the same characters over and over again who just so happened to be the best tier and it makes it so boring. Due to this game being new and people learning new things about it, the tier list can change drastically in the matter of a day which is why I find it so interesting to check up on frequently to see who everyone thinks is badass one day and who is completely “unusable” the next day.

Project 0

The media that I obsessed over this week was narwhal. Narwhal is an application on my iPhone that is a platform for reddit. The reason that I use this instead of the normal reddit app is because of the simplicity and easy access to every function that reddit offers. I may be bias because I hold the phone with my right hand, but the app is very user friendly for right handed people who just want one hand on there phone. Using my thumb I can scroll, up vote, down vote, save, and search without really reaching with my thumb or needing extra effort. For an app like reddit where it is basically just a sea of information to get lost into, it’s very key yo make the user experience very seamless. Even one extra button to click or poorly placed function can negatively effect how much time you put into your redditing. I find myself scrolling through reddit way more on my phone than the desktop interface and I believe it’s simply because of the interface of narwhal. Narwhal sucks you in and then when you realize you’ve been reading for a half hour you snap out of it and realize what you’ve been doing

Up vote

Just pull a smidge farther for down vote

Observe

One thing that has been seriously annoying me is the “In case you missed it” feature on Twitter.

These are tweets that I usually see anyways while scrolling or this message pops again to make sure that I REALLY did not miss it.  I usually don’t like or retweet anything when these pop up so I am unsure why it keeps popping up and so frequently.

Project 0 Week 4

The media I was obsessed with this week was the Disney Tsum Tsum App. I visited home for the weekend and my mom is absolutely obsessed with this app. Whenever I visit home I always end up playing this app more because of her. The game is also really fun and cute in general. You connect 3 or more matching disney characters to one another to earn points. It’s very simple and doesn’t require a lot of thought which makes it relaxing (and also easy to get sucked into playing for a long time.) The app updates very regularly, with new characters and a new event every month which causes the player to come back for more. Events also make the player play more to finish everything and get a pin, and I haven’t missed a single event yet so I super focus on the game when it gets close to events ending. This month, there were 6 new characters added and the event was for Valentines day. At this point, I mostly play this game because of my mom since it just ends up taking up a lot of time, but I still really like it and this event made me want to play it more again. Every time you finish a card there’s a really cute animation of the characters like the one I posted above. I’ve had the app for a long time so seeing the new animations is one of the things that I like the most because I know what they used to be and I know how much more effort and time is being put into the game now which is super awesome.

Project 0 2/19

My new media obsession has to do with a new adblocker I installed called ghostery. I downloaded it after we talked about it in class. I’ve never used an adblocker before, so I didn’t know what to expect. Now, whenever I go onto websites, new ones or ones I’ve used before, my eyes are automatically drawn to the little notification number next to the ghost icon. This number tells you how many trackers and ads the app is blocking from any given website. Websites I’d been on plenty of times before have trackers that have been storing my information. It’s become kind of a bad habit, constantly checking how much I’m being monitored. But I guess this should come as no surprise.

OBSEVE: 2/19

This week I decided to do my observe on this game I found in the app store called “Make it Rain: Love of Money”. I was recommended to get it from a friend, who said it was very addicting. While I’m still confused about the actual point of the game, users were supposed to collect money in order to buy properties or invest in businesses, and essentially move up the rankings of the game. I don’t know if there was any actual reward at the end or money reward but there was rumored to be one, which is why the game appealed to many people. The main screen was a stake of money, and by swiping on the screen, you mimicked the “make it rain” action, which is a play on a trend that was once popular – the more money you swipe, the more money you earn and that’s how you initially get money to invest and buy virtual businesses and properties. THe game was highly addictive because basically all you had to do was swipe the screen to make money. And by users swiping on the screen, the application was able to increase their revenue bc users were engaging with the app. Such a smart idea in terms of capitalizing on users, not so much for a game. However, apparently within the first week of it’s release it made a crap ton of money and was number one in the app store. I played it for a few days and admittedly I became a little obsessed, but once the initial interest wore off and i realized i was using my own time to not win actual money, my obsession faded.

Observe #4

So recently I have noticed on Youtube that under certain news organization videos they have added a little disclaimer on the bottom of every one of their videos describing how they are publicly funded or funded by the government.  Each one of these disclaimers contains a link to a wikipedia article on the respective news organizations.  According to Youtube, these disclaimers are only seen by U.S. residents and are to help against the problem of fake news and propaganda in the media and also to give viewers additional information so they know more about their news sources.  Personally, I think this is one of the most absurd ideas ever.  If they wanted to specifically target fake news, they would include a report button on videos for that, and once there are a significant amount of fake news reports add a tag on the video stating it may be fake news.  Currently this disclaimer is attached to every video say the BBC or PBS uploads, regardless of whether the information they post is legitimate or not.  Also, in regards to these disclaimers all they provide is one wikipedia article on the news page, some of which provide more positive information on the organizations than negative.  Lastly, these disclaimers are only being attached to news organizations that are publicly funded or funded by the government.  However, many organizations that have been known to report misinformation in the past have absolutely no disclaimers at all such as Fox News or InfoWars.  These disclaimers just seem very bizarre to me and feel like Youtube is trying to influence their users to watch certain videos over other ones.

Observe #4

I pulled up Google and I’m not sure why I JUST noticed this: maybe its new? maybe I’ve just been oblivious to it? But there were 4 moving balls just to the top left-hand corner of “Google” that I’ve never seen before.

They were moving in this swirly motion and I starred at it for like 2 minutes straight. Not sure what Google achieves by doing this..but it made me forget what I was going to type into the search engine!
